SUMMER is well and truly over and the wind and rain has arrived.
So perhaps now is the time to invest in a new brolly, especially with more wet weather due in the coming week.
We have picked some of the High Street’s best umbrellas and model Annabel Mizel, 25, tests them out in front of a very powerful wind machine.
She says: “I’m rating them out of ten for value, style, opening speed and water resistance – everything you look for in a good brolly.”
Georgette Culley and Abby McHale reveal how she got on…
- Polka-dot ,£7.95, Timpson – buy now
Good value and very sturdy, with a strong mechanical button.
Feels like you get a lot for your money.
Fabric’s thick and the style is classic.
Score: 8/10
- Zebra print, £12, Next – buy now
My animal instinct was right on this one, it’s good and strong.
I love the print and yellow curved handle.
It is strong and reliable but still fits in your handbag.
Score: 6/10
This bright design may not be for everyone, but it works well[/caption]
- Rainbow stripe, £15, Accessorize – buy now
Sturdy for such a little umbrella but I’m not keen on the print.
Fabric is thin and not sure if it would hold out in a storm, but has done OK in test.
Score: 7/10
- Blue and pink, £5, Tiger – buy now
This will keep you singing in the rain with its snazzy push-open diamond button.
Held up well against the wind machine and felt the sturdiest of the bunch.
10/10
- Dark floral, £14, Paperchase – buy now
Classy, and easy to open – but strength is average.
I wouldn’t trust it if I’d just had an expensive blow-dry.
Score: 6/10
M&S umbrella did not meet expectations[/caption]
- Geometic print, £12.50, M&S – buy now
For Marks & Sparks, I’m very disappointed.
I won’t be showering this one with love. It fell apart in first few seconds of the test.
Wouldn’t trust it in light drizzle, let alone a storm.
Score: 2/10

Oh dear, this umbrella failed our test[/caption]
- Leopard print, £7.99, New Look – buy now
This is too flimsy and can’t handle the wind machine.
It turned inside out very quickly and almost snapped in half.
It wouldn’t last a minute in this horrible weather.
Score: 1/10
