Chelsea fans greet Hudson-Odoi with huge roar – but biggest shock is Jorginho love-in
THERE was a roar of approval from the home fans when Callum Hudson-Odoi was introduced as a 63rd minute substitute – and an even bigger one when he played a part in Chelsea’s second goal against Brighton.
Fit-again after an Achilles operation and having just signed a new deal, Hudson-Odoi scored in the 7-1 win over Grimsby.
But for talented forward, this was his first Premier League match since April 22 against Burnley when he sustained the nasty injury.
So the fact he was on the pitch alongside home-grown players Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori was a cause for celebration among those home fans.
Finally, Chelsea have won a game in the League at home under Frank Lampard.
Chelsea’s new direction under Lampard, due to their transfer embargo, has been the story of the season and it is no surprise the home fans have been relishing this change.
The biggest shock, though, is the amount of love which is now heading in the way of Jorginho.
He scored the opening goal from the penalty spot – his first League goal of the season – in what was a hard-fought win over Brighton.
As he scored past Mat Ryan who was rooted to the spot, Chelsea fans sang the name of the Italian international, who is certainly decent at taking a penalty – he has scored 12 of his last 13.

But Jorginho appearing to be so popular is amazing when you consider he was a hate figure last season.
He was condemned by association with Maurizio Sarri. Jorginho followed the coach from Napoli, costing £52million – and received a lot of stick as he took over the central position occupied by N’Golo Kante.
Sarri was crucified for this but Chelsea fans have gone quiet as Lampard is doing the same thing.
Kane missed this game with a hamstring injury but had he started, would have played in a slightly advanced position to Jorginho – so maybe Sarri was right after all.
Because if Chelsea are to improve this season, while the kids are important – Hudson-Odoi played the pass to Willian for the second goal – Jorginho and Kante have a massive role to play.
And Lampard will need both players fit for Wednesday’s nasty-looking Champions League trip to Lille.

Equally, it was vitally important for Chelsea to get those three points at Stamford Bridge even though they sailed dangerously, at times. Another home failure would have been tough for some to swallow.
But for the time being at least, things are starting to fall into place for Lampard even though there will still be some pain ahead.
But there is no doubt that Jorginho, who is a far better player than some fans have given him credit for, could prove to be a major player for Chelsea this season.
