Elton John says his mum tried to spoil his civil partnership to David Furnish because she was jealous
ELTON John has claimed his mum Sheila set out to spoil his civil ceremony to David Furnish by acting like a “raving sociopath”.
The 72-year-old music icon said she spoke loudly during the vows, snubbed the private lunch and was so rude to guests at the party that Sharon Osbourne said she wanted to kill her.
Writing in his book, which is being serialised in the Mail, Elton said she made trouble from the moment she arrived at his Old Windsor home with his stepfather Derf.
He said: “I was as happy as I could ever remember being. And that was the moment my mother turned up, in character as a raving sociopath.”
The star claimed she steadfastly refused to leave the car when she arrived at his sprawling Woodside mension.
Elton added: “Then Mum announced she wouldn’t be joining the convoy of cars setting off for Windsor, nor would she be coming to the private lunch afterwards.”
He adds that he had a sinking feeling she was going to “stink up” and said she gave spoiling his big day her best shot.
Elton wrote: “When David and I exchanged our vows, she started talking, very loudly, over the top of us: rattling on about how she didn’t like the venue and couldn’t imagine getting married in a place like this.
“When the time came for the witnesses to sign the licence, she signed her name, snapped: ‘It’s done, then,’ slammed the pen down and stormed off.
“At the party in the evening, she tutted and groaned and rolled her eyes during the speeches.”
He added: “She was vile to everyone. [The art dealer] Jay Jopling made the fatal mistake of saying to her: ‘Isn’t this a lovely day?’ which apparently counted as merciless provocation.
“‘I’m glad you f***ing well think so,’ snapped Mum in response. At one point, Sharon Osbourne sidled up to me. ‘I know she’s your mother,’ she muttered, ‘but I want to kill her.'”
Elton claims he later found out from David’s parents that she didn’t approve of two men “getting married”.
However, he added that his mother had been nothing but supportive when he came out as gay and had never been homophobic.

He concluded instead that she was jealous, writing: “She couldn’t cope with the thought of the umbilical cord finally being cut and she didn’t care about anything else, including the fact that I was finally happy.”
Sheila died in 2017 at the age of 92, with Elton telling fans: “I am in shock. Travel safe, mum. Thank you for everything.”
Sheila changed her will just three weeks before her death — leaving her superstar son two urns and some family photos.
The star’s official autobiography, Me: Elton John, will be published on 15 October.
