Crafty parents turn Ikea furniture into original pieces for their kids using some creative DIY

CREATIVE parents are transforming mass-produced Ikea furniture into original pieces for their kids using some simple DIY.

The Swedish homeware store is the go-to place for any homeware, but it can mean that everyone’s living rooms look exactly the same.

In a bid to give their children some bespoke pieces without breaking the bank, crafty mums and dads are giving cheap Ikea furniture a makeover.

Proud parents have been sharing their creations online using the hashtag #Ikeahacksforkids, detailing how they turned run-of-the-mill toys into home-made masterpieces.

Another parent cobbled together various pieces to make a truly unique toy kitchen space.

They said: “This here is the famous Raskog cart but then with some Skadis pegboards added to the sides, creating a super handy mobile arts & crafts cart.”

And they shared a tip for budding DIY enthusiasts, saying: “Practically anything you have can be hacked into something cooler and handier.”

Other mums decided to spruce up the popular play kitchens, adding some trendy tile stickers to make it stand out from the others.

One mum revealed how she created an ice-cream shop play space, saying: “I re-purposed the oven to become my ice cream stand.”

Taking on a big project, one parent created a coffee bar out of another toy kitchen.

They said: “Can you guess what we upgraded to make this play coffee cart for our son?”

A lot of tables and chair were given a makeover, with one mum revealing her steps, saying: “Touched up the paint on the girls’ table, recovered the seats and dip painted the legs.”

Another mum tackled the Latt table from Ikea, painting the legs, stitching some cushions and using chalkboard paint.

It took her an hour and a half and cost £23, adding on her blog: “If you’re looking for the perfect activity table for your toddler, the Latt table from Ikea is the way to go.

“It’s affordable and it’s not character themed…. a win for me!”

Beds were another big item parents have been customising, with parents creating mountainous landscapes and princess houses for their kids.

One mum wrote: “I finished this simple DIY for this bed we made my daughter.”

One ingenious mum managed to create a triple bunk-bed – with a pull out bed at the bottom – creating a tower which can sleep four children.

While one mum decided a glue gun was the way forward for her project, revealing she customised a side table.

She said: “I’m happy with the boho makeover of this plain IKEA nightstand!”

Meanwhile this mum transformed an Ikea clock to make her kids stay in bed for longer.

And this mum gets her kids to keep quiet by telling them they need to lie still to ‘charge’ their glow-in-the-dark pyjamas.

And this mum transformed her daughters’ bedroom into two rooms for just £60.
