Marcus Rashford has been leading United’s line since Romelu Lukaku left for Inter Milan in the summer but many think the Englishman is better suited out wide.
Werner, 23, has scored 68 goals in 124 games in the three seasons he has been with the Bundesliga club.
And United have highlighted him as the ideal man to shoulder some of the goal scoring burden, according to the Express.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been repeatedly linked with a January move for Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic.
But Werner is reportedly considered a more viable long term option.
Given the German’s impressive goal scoring record, Leipzig will be keen to hold on to him until the end of the season meaning United might have to wait until next summer.
Solskjaer recently admitted his squad was a little light.

He said: “I always thought his best position is when he comes from the left to the centre, not when he’s a clear number nine.
“I always thought it was better for him to come from the side, especially the left side.”
