A DEVOTED couple who were looking forward to their diamond wedding anniversary were killed in a hit-and-run crash.
Grandparents Lawrence and Ann Nickerson were crossing a road on their way to an Italian restaurant when they were knocked down.
The driver fled as Ann, 75, lay dying. She was pronounced dead at the scene in Newcastle.
Lawrence, 79, was taken to hospital, but doctors could not save him.
The couple, of Heaton, Newcastle, were childhood sweethearts and ran a family bakery business for 42 years.
They were due to celebrate 60 years of marriage next year.

In a statement, their family said: “For our loved ones to be taken from us in such a horrific and tragic way, we will be forever changed and mourning this loss.”
Police probing the tragedy at 7.20pm on November 23, have renewed appeals for information.
They arrested two men, aged 22 and 24, who have been released under investigation.
