It is understood the player has been affected by abuse on social media, injury problems and the loss of his England place.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “What he has had to deal with, that will be between us.
“You can criticise anyone about anything but as a manager, I have to look after these boys in the good and the bad times.
“It’s good to see him back to his old self. He’s got a great attitude.”
Lingard and team-mate Fred received racist abuse from a fan in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Manchester City.
He tweeted: “Shameful behaviour. It may be the derby but there is never a reason to be racist.”
