Police say he forced his way into a house in Melbourne, Australia, at about 5am on Sunday.
The 38-year-old man victim received numerous stab wounds to the chest, and was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remains in a serious condition.
He also left a considerable trail of blood down Ferguson Street as he ran for his life, according to police.
A 24-year-old woman, who police say is pregnant to the alleged attacker, was unharmed in the incident.
Along with attempted murder he has been charged with aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, assault and reckless conduct endangering life.
He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
Neighbour John Dujakovic told Nine News he heard “loud noise, screaming, yelling, all sorts of hullabaloo going on”.

CCTV shows a naked and bleeding man running through the grounds of the nearby Sunshine City Club looking over his shoulder as though scared he was being chased.
He then scales the backyard fence of a townhouse, before knocking on the glass door and calling for help.
Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Karp said the victim was stabbed multiple times in a family violence incident, and “obviously at this point we’re lucky someone hasn’t lost their life”.
He added: “There’s two victims: a female, who is at Sunshine police station assisting them with their inquiries … she’s two months pregnant to the offender.”
