A WOMAN has died after a horror crash on the M1 motorway on Christmas Eve.
A stretch of the busy motorway was closed last night following the crash on the northbound carriageway in Bedfordshire at around 11.15pm.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bedfordshire Police said a number of vehicles were involved in the collision between Junction 11a and Junction 12, between Aylesbury and Flitwick.
Drivers were left stranded for several hours into the early hours of Christmas Day following the crash.
A second accident took place on the M1 in Hertfordshire, between Luton Airport and Dunstable.
Highways England described it as a “serious collision”.
Diversions are in place for people wishing to use the motorway on Christmas Day.
Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Police forces are involved in both incidents and an investigation has been launched into the fatal crash.

A Bedfordshire Police spokesperson said: “The M1 has now reopened following a serious collision on the northbound carriageway just before junction 12 at around 11.15pm last night.
“A number of vehicles were involved in the collision and sadly a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Christmas Day travellers heading southbound through Hertfordshire are advised to go via Luton and Harpenden and those wishing to drive northbound through Bedfordshire should use the Dunstable Bypass.
