WEST HAM are rivalling Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica ace Gedson Fernandez.
The Portuguese club have indicated they are willing to listen to offers for the 20-year-old midfielder this month – with a host of clubs interested.
United have been watching Gedson for the past few months and have singled him out as a potential target as they look to refresh their squad.
But it has emerged that the Hammers have already held preliminary talks with his advisers as he looks to decide on a new club, with a fee around £34million set as the asking price.
And there is a belief that David Moyes could have an advantage in the battle for his signature because Gedson has family in London and he is attracted to the prospect of joining them in the capital.
Moyes today admitted that news of West Ham’s interest is genuine.

He said: “I do not think I would say we are in deep talks, that’s not quite correct.
“He is a name that has been mentioned alongside many others. If good players are available, there are no doubts me and the owners will be looking at them.
“If we can strengthen the squad I would like to do so, but it would only be for the players we think are correct. He certainly comes into this category.
“We want to add a player in that department and trying to get the right one in January would never be easy for anybody.

“But, if we could add one to the group, then it would help us.”
United are also thought to have contacted the Portugal international’s agents to sound out his interest in a move to Old Trafford.
With Paul Pogba’s future at United far from certain, the club are looking at other midfield alternatives who came come in and improve the squad.
