The 59-year-old was sent death threats during the last series of Strictly Come Dancing, but said the “bullying” was taken even further today when someone came to her place of work.
She told fans: “As we know I had quite a lot of bullying on Strictlly last series and my Instagram inbox was full of horrific and horrendous messages.
“Now it’s gone a step further and I’ve had a hand delivered message addressed to me, with not so nice comments or words.
“I do find it quite upsetting when I’ve been out there performing and then I read something like this from someone who doesn’t even know me.”
The nasty letter was addressed to Shirley and passed to staff at the Hippodrome Theatre in Darlington where she’s playing Mother Nature in Jack and the Beanstalk.

One section read: “Gobsh***. Could you – during your gobsh***ing performance – remove your head form y our huge fat a***hole.”
Further abuse aimed at the Strictly head judge follows a difficult series after Shirley was lambasted for dumping Radio One DJ Dev Griffin and his pro partner Dianne Buswell from the competition over Viscountess Emma Weymouth in the dance off.
Trying to put a positive spin on the situation, Shirley added today: “Anyone out there who receives awful messages or hate mail, the issue is the other person’s not ours.
“My message is, be strong going into 2020 and really love yourself. Don’t be phased by the bullies.”
She shared pictures of the envelope and letter sent to the theatre on Instagram.

“Enough is enough now. Positive vibes for 2020 please. #hatemail #hate @motsimabuse @brunotonioliofficial @craigrevelhorwood @bbcstrictly have a beautiful 2020.”
Shirley was inundated with messages of support from fans, including Love Island’s Amy Hart who said: “Sorry you have to receive this Shirley. Sad sad people x.”
Another added: “Love you @shirleyballas you’re an inspiration to so so many this person has a lot of pain in their heart and they will have to deal with the karma.”
