NETFLIX series The Crown turned Manchester into bustling New York City as they filmed Princess Diana’s 1989 solo visit yesterday.
The city’s Northern Quarter was given a Manhattan makeover, filled with graffiti, American posters and building signs while extras lined the streets in NYPD costumes.
In another photo, busy crew members were seen transforming Manchester’s Dale Street into the Lower East Side, complete with a NYC subway station and yellow taxi cabs, synonymous with the Big Apple.
Filming the upcoming fourth series, actress Emma Corrin transformed into Princess Diana in a coloured check blazer, equipped with of the time exaggerated shoulder pads, and matching midi skirt.
The 24-year-old’s hair was worked into Diana’s trademark neatly blow-dried coif as she drove in the back of limo for the scene, which is based on her solo Henry Street Settlement visit in the 80s.
At the time, the Henry Street Settlement, which was founded in 1893 by humanitarian Lillian Wald, was a halfway house for homeless families in New York’s Lower East Side.
During her visit to the not-for-profit social service agency, she met homeless mothers, spoke to kindergarten kids and even tied one child’s shoelace, according to reports at the time.
It was on this same trip that the Princess paid a visit to young AIDS patients at Harlem Hospital.
The upcoming series, which follows Queen Elizabeth’s reign as monarch, will be the first time that viewers see Princess Diana.
The third series ended with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and the fourth is likely to go from the end of the 70s up to about 1990, though the exact time span is still to be confirmed.

The new series will feature the Queen and Margaret Thatcher’s disagreements over Apartheid in South Africa, the 1984-5 miners’ strike and the 1982 Falklands War.
The Sun also revealed how The Crown series four will show Margaret Thatcher publicly humiliating The Queen by outing KGB spy. It will also cover Prince Charles’ wedding to Princess Diana.
Filming in Manchester is set to continue until Monday. Interestingly enough, the street where production is currently underway is the same location used to film several episodes of Peaky Blinders, and Captain America.
