BERNIE Sanders has lashed out at another fellow Democrat by accusing Mike Bloomberg of trying to “buy presidency.”
The Vermont Senator slammed former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for his projected ad spending in his 2020 Democratic presidential campaign.
Sanders told Dean Obeidallah on SiriusXM‘s Progress channel: “He’s part of the problem. Look, Bloomberg, anybody else in America has the right to run for president.
“But I think, in a democracy, you do not have the right to buy the presidency.”
His criticism comes after Bloomberg’s presidential campaign spent $11 million for a 60-second advertisement during the Super Bowl LIV broadcast on FOX.
Bloomberg officially launched his presidential campaign on November 24, 2019 – as a late entry.
Having ranked the 11th richest person in the world last year, Bloomberg vowed to spend at least $150 million of his money on his 2020 campaign.
Sanders said: “It really is absurd that we have a guy who is prepared to spend, already, many hundreds of millions of dollars on TV ads.
“Meanwhile, he did not do what all of the other Democratic candidates do.
“He wasn’t holding town meetings in Iowa, or New Hampshire, or Nevada, or South Carolina. Those were not important enough for him.
“He could simply buy the election with hundreds of millions of dollars of ads. That is wrong.
“That is the basic, fundamental problem of American society — is that billionaires have extraordinary wealth and power over the economic and political life of this country.
“And that’s what we are fighting to defend.”
Bloomberg’s national poll performance has now risen to 11.2 percent and put him ahead of Pete Buttigieg, according to recent polls.
Joe Biden is currently leading the polls with 24.3 percent.
He is followed by Sanders, ranking at 21.4 percent, and Elizabeth Warren, ranking at 13.3 percent.
President Trump recently told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that “little” Bloomberg asked to stand on a box for the Democratic debates.
Buttigieg and Sanders emerged as the top victors in last week’s Iowa caucus and both claimed victory for their own campaigns.
Due to days of technical issues, an official winner was unable to be declared by The Associated Press with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
