THE grandad of a two-year-old girl injured falling 40ft from her bedroom window said his daughter is a “fantastic mum” after two people were arrested on suspicion of neglect.
The toddler was left fighting for life in hospital after the horror in Portsmouth, Hants, but is now in a serious but stable condition.
A man, 29, and woman, 26, were arrested on suspicion of child neglect but have since been released on bail.
The pair were also held for possession of a Class B drug and possession of a weapon, although police confirmed they will face no further action for that offence.
The toddler’s grandad, who we are not naming, today described his daughter as a “fantastic mother”.
He told The Sun Online: “She’s a very good mum and always has been.
“She loves her children very much and has always been dedicated to them.
“She had her son quite young and I’ve never known a woman of that age to be so good in that respect.”
‘MASSIVE THUD’
Horrified neighbours had yelled out “that’s your baby” to the toddler’s parents after hearing a “massive thud” at the block of flats on Thursday night.
Witness Emma Reilly, 31, said a metal box on the street below her window broke her fall and believes the toddler “would have died” if she hadn’t fallen on it.
The neighbour said: “I heard a massive thud from outside and at first I thought someone had been run over.
“But when I looked down from my window I could see the baby lying on the floor.
HORROR FALL
“I shouted down to her mum because she had obviously been in the bath and had a towel around her head but came to the window to see what the commotion was.
“I shouted ‘that’s your baby, that’s your baby!’
“It was horrible to see.”
Emma said the “lovely and sweet” tot landed on the telephone box in front of two teenage boys.
She continued: “Her face was huge because it was swollen so much, she had a big black eye and down at the scene we were told she had a broken jaw.
“We brought her eight year old brother up here to keep him away but he was confused so we had to tell him an old lady fell over.
“He asked us ‘why is my mummy crying?’ so we just said it was because an old lady fell over.”
Another neighbour, Karen Marsh, added: “[The mum] kept asking ‘is she going to be OK? Is she going to be OK?'”
Hampshire Police said their enquiries were ongoing.

A spokesperson added: “The girl is currently being treated at Southampton General Hospital where her condition is now described as serious but stable.
“We can confirm that a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both from Portsmouth, were arrested on suspicion of neglect of a child to cause unnecessary suffering/injury, possession of a weapon for discharge of a noxious liquid/gas/electrical incapacitation device and possession of a Class B drug.
“They have both been released on police bail while enquiries continue but no further action is being taken in relation to the allegation of possession of a weapon.”
