When will mobile hairdressers and beauticians be allowed back to work?
Salons and barber shops will be shut until July 4 at the earliest, keeping over 43,000 specialists out of work for another month.
The gradual lifting of lockdown rules has caused some confusion amongst hairdressers and their customers.
However Dominic Raab told Sky News: “From 4 July, at the earliest, we’ll look at other sectors and that will include hospitality, but it will also include personal care and people like hairdressers.”
This means that we still can’t get a haircut, even if they come to our gardens.
The Freelance Hairdressers Association’s has confirmed that freelancers are not allowed to work at peoples homes.
The FHA said: “It is not OK to work under any circumstances.
“The Government states that hairdressers cannot work until 4th July at the earliest. If you work you may endanger the health of yourself and your client and extend the period of lockdown.
What other help is available?
THE government has also introduced the following measures to help self-employed workers and businesses during the coronavirus outbreak.
- Income-tax deferrals: Self-assessment income tax payments, that were due in July, can be deferred to the end of January next year.
- Rent support: Businesses who are struggling to pay their rents are protected from eviction until the end of June.
- Coronavirus business interruption loan scheme: SMEs can get loans and overdrafts of up to £5 million for up to six years and the government with guarantee up to 80 per of these loans.
- Grants of up to £10,000: Small firms can get grants of up to £10,000 to help with ongoing business costs.
- VAT payments: VAT payments can be deferred for three months.
- Tax bill help: SMEs that cannot afford their tax bills can ask HMRC for a “time to pay” arrangement so any debt collection is suspended.
- Business rates holiday: A 12-month business rates holiday has been introduced for many businesses.
How will social distancing work when getting your hair cut?
According to the 50-page reopening blueprint, hairdressers and barbers are among businesses which will not be allowed to reopen until they meet “Covid-19-secure” guidelines.
The document may include measures such as the use of face masks – as has been seen for hair salons in countries in Europe – and social distancing.
“Many measures require the development of new safety guidelines that set out how each type of physical space can be adapted to operate safely,” the government document reads.
Salons are likely to operate at only 50 per cent capacity in order to maintain social distancing measures, with those cutting your hair working on shift patterns to minimise contact with staff and customers.

What should I do if I’m a hairdresser?
This is a stressful time for all self-employed workers and hairdressers are no different.
