It is not yet clear how the coronavirus pandemic will effect the vote, but both candidates have continued campaigning via social media and remote broadcast interviews.
Recent weeks have seen the president repeatedly attack mail-in voting, a system that could be used if social distancing measures remain in place but which is known to increase Democratic turnout.
Speaking last night, Biden said: “This president is going to try to steal this election.”
Asked whether he thought the president could seek to rig the process in his own favour, he added: “It’s my greatest concern. My single greatest concern.”
Taking to twitter last month, the president acknowledged that his opposition to mail-in voting was in part motivated by concerns about its potential impact on his own party’s vote.
“MAIL-IN VOTING WILL LEAD TO MASSIVE FRAUD AND ABUSE,” he wrote.
“IT WILL ALSO LEAD TO THE END OF OUR GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY.
“WE CAN NEVER LET THIS TRAGEDY BEFALL OUR NATION.”
Analysis of ballots cast in previous election have shown negligible levels of potentially fraudulent voting, the Washington Post reported.
‘HE’LL BE ESCORTED OUT’
Biden was also asked whether he had thought about the possibility that Trump could lose the election but refuse to vacate the White House.
“Yes I have,” he said.
He later referenced the numerous former military officials who have recently criticised Trump over, among other things, his response to the protests that followed the death of George Floyd.
“I promise you, I’m absolutely convinced they will escort him from the White House with great dispatch,” he said.
There has so far been no suggestion from the president or his campaign that he would refuse to accept the result of the election in the event that he lost.
