But you can still tune in and watch Royal Ascot at home on ITV and Sky Sports Racing (or prepare for the next time you can actually go to the races) and I’ve got some bargain tips for you.
Race you to the TV . . .
GLAM UP: OK, you might not be there in person but that doesn’t mean you can’t watch from the sofa in style. Dig out your most extravagant hat or fascinator.
If you don’t have one, now is the perfect time to get one as it will save you buying one next year. I like the Debut pale pink crin trim bow saucer hat from debenhams.com, plus it’s on sale for £20, down from £40.
TAKE A SNAP: Fancy your chances at winning some prizes and being charitable at the same time? Once you’re all dolled up in your favourite hat, take a photo and share it on social media with the hashtags #StyledWithThanks and #RoyalAscot.
Every photo shared with those hashtags will be in with a chance of winning top prizes. Ascot is also encouraging participants to donate £5 to its #StyledWithThanks campaign page, with all money raised to be split between four frontline charities.
Find out more at ascot.co.uk/styledwiththanks.
PASS THE TEA: Why not make your own afternoon tea to enjoy while you watch the race? You can make scones from 200g self-raising flour, 100ml lemonade and 100ml double cream — just YouTube it — cheap and simple.
If baking isn’t your cup of tea, check out Morrisons’ new picnic platter. For £10 you get scones, ham sandwiches, tuna andwiches, mini pork pies, cherry bakewells, strawberries, quiche and salad. Order online and collect at the store. That’s a bargain.
IT’S A DRAW: If you want to enjoy the races in peace, keep young racing fans occupied by designing their own silks. Visit thejockeyclub.co.uk to download and print free templates, then let them get creative.
