They even had to choose what flowers would be appropriate for their memorial and draw up a guest list.
The bemused pupils were also told to decide whether they should be buried or cremated.
And they were asked to reveal where they would like to be buried or have their ashes scattered.
The religious studies homework was given to Year Eight pupils during lockdown by St Paul’s Catholic School in Leicester.
Mum Gemma Marston posted the assignment online and said: “Anyone else feel that getting them to plan their own funeral is a bit too much? Or am I being over the top?”
One parent responded: “Some children would be scared at the thought of dying and it would cause a lot of fear.”
Another said: “Way over the top. Kids have enough to deal with without this.”
And another wrote: “Wow it’s just wrong on so many levels.”
Tabby Mcgailey said: “This is disgusting especially seeing as we are in a pandemic and 1,000s are dying.”

One response was from a teacher, who said: “I wouldn’t do this. Some children can be very susceptible to ideas about death and funerals.
“You don’t always know if one of your pupils has had a recent loss and this sort of thing can be very triggering for pupils.”
The school apologised and said the homework was sent out “in error”.
