THIS IS US fans are so shocked by the “crazy” ending to season 5 premiere that it left them “gasping and spilling their tea”.
Since launching in 2016 it’s become one of the most talked about show’s ever thanks to its twists and turns, and its latest instalment has called into question one very note-worthy character we all thought was dead.
Warning: Spoilers ahead! If you haven’t seen the first two episodes of the new series then look away now because shocks are about to be revealed.
The two hour premiere of series 5 began with Randall questioning his birth story with the flashbacks sending viewers back to that time and the perspectives of both Jack and Rebecca and Randall’s birth parents, William and Laurel.
Fans of the show already know that Jack and Rebecca go through the harrowing loss of a baby during childbirth, and meet Randall the same day and decide to adopt him.
What we haven’t seen before is what happened to Randall’s parents – William and Laurel.
During one of the flashbacks viewers get to see how happy the parents-to-be were and all they made.
And although Laurel has been clean she begs William to get her something to stop the pain after she unexpectedly gives birth in their apartment.
The devastating recap shows the proud dad, holding his new son, goes to check on Laurel only to find she has overdosed.
As the paramedics try to revive her, William leaves with the baby and takes the bus ride to the fire station.
Later, after Randall has arrived safely at the hospital and met his future parents, another flashback jumps back to the moment the medical team are just about to give up on Laurel when they suddenly feel a pulse and she gasps for air.
Cue a gasp from fans who were understandably left ill prepared for such an emotionally charged premiere (it’s been a hard year) and flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “Holy Sh*t that #ThisIsUs ending….I gasped so loud my hubby though I was hurt”
“Just saw the ending…..literally dropped my hot tea all over couch!!! I did not see that coming,” added another.
While a third gushed: “Omggggggggg that bloody ending, crazyyyyyyyy #ThisIsUs”
