There’s something for everyone on Saturday.
It’s the final day of the turf Flat season at Doncaster, there are cracking cards over the sticks at Wincanton and Aintree and it’s day two at the Breeders’ Cup in Keeneland.
Let’s get stuck in. I’ll start at Doncaster where the Listed Gillies Fillies’ Stakes has a wide-open look to it.
CHAMADE (2.05 Doncaster) is the one who makes plenty of appeal and double-figure odds.
She won with plenty of authority in a hot fillies handicap at Glorious Goodwood back in August and ran better than the bare result when sixth trying to give away lumps of weight at York next time out.
She has been freshened up since then and remains a filly with plenty of upside, having had just six career starts.
Her trainer Ralph Beckett could hardly have his string in better form right now, she is proven on soft ground and, given she likes to race positively, she’s well drawn in stall one.
That’s not to say she’s a banker, this is an ultra-competitive heat. But I like the fact she arrives off the back of a short break and she strikes me as the kind of filly who has plenty more to offer.
As I mentioned last week, it’s still early days in the jumps season, so don’t go mental with your bets. The form will settle down soon.
But one thing that is already clear is the red-hot form of the Paul Nicholls yard, and the 11-time champion trainer can claim yet another Badger Beers Chase with DANNY WHIZZBANG (3.35 Wincanton).
The horse is bang there at the head of the betting, but for good reason as he remains a very exciting prospect. He has been fragile, but when he’s right he’s very smart as he showed when winning a Grade 2 first time out last season.
He clearly goes well fresh, and though his final two performances of last year were a little underwhelming, he’s had a wind op and he return with his stable banging in winners left right and centre.
He gets his preferred ground this weekend and, given his physical scope and unexposed profile, it will be bitterly disappointing if he doesn’t prove much better than a mark of 145 this winter.
