Deidre wrote to me several times this year to make sure I was OK
DEAR DEIDRE: I FIX all my friends’ problems but I wrote to you because I was feeling so low and lonely that I just sat crying alone.
I am 51 and a single parent after a bad marriage left me with two children to raise alone. I worked extra jobs to put them through university and I’m proud of their achievements. But with them gone, I couldn’t seem to pull my life into shape.

So I tried dating – but I just ended up mending broken men who wanted to talk about their exes or who had so many problems that they needed counselling.
There are various groups I belong to but Covid made everything worse. The groups stopped meeting so I couldn’t see my friends.
But I work in a supermarket where I have to chat happily to customers all day long.
You wrote to me several times during this year, checking that I was OK. You are a lovely person and it’s heart-warming to know there are people like you out there.
I am a lot better than I was. I took your advice and phoned the doctor, and treatment is going well. I have much more energy and I’m sleeping.
Part of me feels a bit embarrassed taking up your time to complain of my woes but I am so thankful you listened and gave me the push I needed.

Most of the time I can suggest something that will ease their struggle at least a bit.
You are a strong person and a wonderful parent who does not have enough self-appreciation. You deserve happiness and I’m sure it will come to you.
