WELSH beer drinkers face a bitter blow after learning that their iconic ale Brains could be brewed in England.

Their best-known beer has been made in the capital Cardiff since 1882 but is under threat.

Brains put its brewery up for sale last month and announced Marston’s would take over its 156 pubs.

Brewing is expected to be moved to England amid fears for the brand’s survival, ITV reports.

It is believed 80 jobs are under threat.

Brains sponsors the Welsh rugby team and its name is emblazoned on the red jerseys.

Nick Morgan, who hosts the Pubtrotters podcast, said: “I’m gobsmacked. Brains is a Welsh institution.

“For it to move elsewhere would be weird.”

One fan, 60, said: “Definitely the worst thing that’s happened in the pandemic. I’ve been drinking Brains all my life.”

Brains chief Alistair Darby admitted it could soon be produced at a new location outside Wales.

He added: “The important thing is that the family retain ownership of the beer and the brand.”
