But medics have now discharged him back into the notorious psychiatric unit’s care.
Doctors had feared the worst for Adebowale after his condition worsened despite only being in his 20s.
Sources described how he had been “fighting for every breath” and needed oxygen.
But he has since made a slow recovery and was ruled fit enough to return to his cushy room at the unit in Crowthorne, Berks.
One source said: “The doctors were happy to let him go back, not least because of Broadmoor’s own extensive medical expertise and resources.
“He is far better cared for than he would be in a prison.
FIEND BACK FROM THE BRINK
“It’ll be a slow recovery though – he’s really been battered by the virus in a way that most in their twenties manage to avoid.”
We told last week how Adebowale had tested positive for Covid while being treated at the psychiatric hospital.
He was taken to hospital but was discharged before returning again when his condition worsened.
Adebowale was handcuffed and under constant supervision while being treated at the NHS facility, which The Sun is not naming for security reasons.
Lee, a fusilier and drummer aged 25, was run over by Adebowale and pal Michael Adebolajo, now 36, before being hacked to death outside barracks in Woolwich, South East London, in May 2013.
Adebolajo, who got a whole life term, remains at top security HMP Frankland, Co Durham.

Adebowale, whose care at Broadmoor costs an estimated £250,000-a–year, is the latest in a string of high profile criminals hit by the pandemic.
The Sun was the first to reveal the death last November of Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, 74, from the virus.
