SOUTHAMPTON are working on a move for Celtic’s Ryan Christie — but are willing to wait until he is free.
The Scotland attacking midfielder, 26, is out of contract at the end of the year and available for a low price before this window shuts.
Ironically the deal could be accelerated if former Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong moves on from St Mary’s.
Saints could step in while Burnley and Sheffield United have him further down their wanted lists.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche may turn to him if the price is right as the summer transfer window is slowly coming to an end.
Christie could sign a pre-contract with one of his suitors now and go in January, but pals say he does not want to risk being sidelined by Celtic.
Southampton are also trying to agree a deal with Dundee United for highly -rated defender Kerr Smith, 16, who has been chased by a raft of Premier League clubs.
Christie joined Celtic in 2015 following an impressive two-year spell at Inverness.

The 26-year-old has since amassed a total of 41 goals and 44 assists in 149 appearances for Celtic.
The Scotland international played 46 times for the Bhoys across all competitions last season.
