He has since returned to work for the company several times, keeping a close eye on his daughter Charlotte as she follows in her father’s footsteps to icon status.
However, amid a number of superstar releases for cost-cutting, the veteran surprisingly left WWE this summer and recently returned to NWA.
Now he has appeared on Renee Paquette’s Oral Sessions podcast to reveal what sparked him to request his release from McMahon – but he also claimed Charlotte has never been happier in her career.
Flair said: “What happened was, I had a bunch of pending opportunities. I had a bunch of things that I was doing currently, at the time, when I signed my contract.
“A couple of deals kept coming along that it got to the point where I was asking them – I think I probably exhausted them [by] asking – not to grandfather me in, but to let me do them.
“And then, of course, the answer was ‘You could do them, maybe.’ I thought of what I was going to say to you today and how I’m gonna handle this.

However, Naitch was adamant he and billionaire McMahon left on good terms before he offered an update on his daughter’s future.
He added: “I talked to Vince after it was over, and I just said, ‘Whatever paths our lives take us, we’re always gonna be brothers.’ He said, ‘You’re damn right,’”
“Ashley (Charlotte) would never leave there, she’s the happiest she’s ever been. Obviously, they’re not mad at me.”
