Kraemer Middle School Principal Michael Young said in a statement that Assistant Principal Moises Plascencia took his life in a private staff area at the school.
The Placentia Police Department responded to the campus, which is located in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District southeast of Los Angeles.
The school statement noted that staff members and students were not present at the time, and the occurrence was not witnessed by anyone.
“Words will never be able to express our true sorrow regarding this loss,” Young said in the statement.
“While we may never make sense of nor understand why this occurred, please know how deeply Mr Plascencia cared for your students, their education, and all of Kraemer Middle School.”
A statement from the district superintendent, Dr Jim Elsasser, said Plascencia was “so much more than a respected assistant principal.”
“He was a father, husband, brother, and friend to so many in our school district community,” Elsasser’s statement read.
“His passing, and the manner in which it occurred, has left us devastated, confused, and heartbroken; however, we ask that you please respect his family’s privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”

Regular operations at the California school were suspended on Monday, though they were expected to resume as normal on Tuesday.
A team of mental health professionals within the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District will be on campus for the remainder of the week to serve and support students, staff, and families, the school said.
Young thanked the community for its patience, flexibility, and understanding as they continue to navigate the tragedy on campus.
“We also thank Placentia PD and our other community partners for their support,” Young’s statement said.
“Our commitment to you is that we will stay in regular communication over the coming days to ensure you are informed about next steps.”
