A gardening and farming expert based out of Texas named Destin Noak, who goes by @TexasGardenGuy on TikTok, has gained a following of nearly 100k users thanks to his videos that teach followers how to build flourishing gardens.
If you’re a newbie to the game, you may want to start off with a smaller container garden.
Destin shared five tips to successfully build one:
THE CONTAINER ITSELF
Step one, the expert said, is to find the right container for your needs.
“Do your research and find out how big the root ball is going to get so that you don’t have to keep up-potting to bigger pots.”
Better to get it right on the first go-around.
SOIL
You’ll want to make sure you choose a soil that allows your plant variety to grow the way it’s meant to.
Destin begins by drilling drainage holes in his container.

Next, he fills it up with leaves, sticks, and grass.
“And then I top it off with a layer of premium compost.”
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
While some plants require direct sunlight, others want more shade – so be sure to check what your plants need ahead of time.
“The best thing about container gardening is: If your plant requires more sunlight, you can just move it around.”
THIRSTY
Container gardens require more water than you think, and you never want to let them get too dry.
“They need to be watered more often because the pots drain so well.”
COLD WEATHER
His final tip addressed how to salvage your plants during those yearly drops in temperature.
