THUNDERSTORMS are expected to sweep Britain for two days before a return to the sun.

Rain is set to hit for most of the country with some sunny spells, although the south-east is most likely to stay dry.

Showers will be experienced most heavily in northern and western parts of the country.

Temperatures are also expected to remain cooler following last week’s 40C heatwave.

Highs of 23C are forecast today for London and Norwich with lows of 11C this evening in northern Scotland, according to the Met Office.

And highs of 23C are expected again tomorrow, the weather experts predict.

It comes after temperatures reached 30C over the weekend.

Sunshine swept in from France as many Brits headed off to the seaside to enjoy it.

The Met Office’s five-day forecast for today says: “A mixture of sunny spells and showers, these mostly light, but perhaps heavy and thundery across southern Scotland, then northern and eastern England.

“Feeling a little cooler for most in a continuing breeze, but still warm in the southeast.”

Scattered showers will continue tonight in mainly northern and eastern areas, with clearer skies across parts of the west.

And the odd light shower will continue throughout Tuesday from southeastern parts of England up to Northern Scotland.

But there will be some warm sunshine too, especially in parts of the southwest, the forecasters said.

Drier weather will remain for the rest of the week and temperatures are not expected to rise until the weekend.

Thunderstorms and rain could also carry on into August, although above-average temperatures are forecast for the start of the month.

Last week, the 40C heatwave was finally brought to an end through thunderstorms.
