I accidentally told my son’s future in-laws he used to wet the bed
DEAR DEIDRE: I HUMILIATED my son in front of his prospective in-laws by announcing that he used to wet the bed.
I’m a woman of 62 and my husband is 65. My son is 32 and getting married in September to a lovely 34-year-old woman.

We were invited to meet our future in-laws at their home for a barbecue and I was a bundle of nerves.
I drank a lot of wine and revealed my son “didn’t stop wetting the bed until he was nine”. He looked crushed.
As soon as the words came out, it was a tumbleweed moment.
My son’s girlfriend looked shocked then she giggled.

Her mother said, “Right, well, I’ll get dessert”, and I just wanted the ground to swallow me up.
My son hasn’t called me since. I feel like I really let him down.

If he was offended with what you said, apologise.
You’re a human being and everyone slips up sometimes.
He was a child when this happened and his fiancée shouldn’t hold that against him. He’s not doing it now.
Return his in-laws’ kind hospitality. Invite them to your home for a meal or tea and cake, but this time steer clear of the wine.
