I get shamed for my pale skin and called a ‘vampire’ – I used to wear fake tan but I’m so much more confident without it
ANYONE who’s stopped using fake tan after using it for a long time will know how strange it can feel.
But one woman has found herself facing online trolls after she quit using self tanner, and has been compared to a vampire and been told she should start using sun beds.
TikToker Belle, who refers to herself as “pale queenie”, has posted a number of videos about how she’s learned to embrace her pale skin.
In one video Belle explains why she gave up using fake tan, saying that she used to be obsessed with using it, and felt it was something of a comfort blanket which she couldn’t even leave her room without.
Talking about her time at university she says: “I felt so self-conscious, if we had a night out I would not be going ever without fake tan on. That was just never going to happen.”
She says that the first moment she thought about changing this was when she attend a physio appointment and he asked her why she, and every girl he sees in her age group, wears “orange paint.”

After explaining that wearing fake tan was what was in style, he told her that she would likely look nicer, and her eyes would stand out more if she stopped wearing it, and Belle realised that he was right.
Reacting to this, one commenter on the video wrote: “If some man told me I would look better without it, that would make me want to wear it more.”
Although, Belle does clarify that her physio is actually quite nice and was just “tryna make me feel more confident.”
In another video she responds to a negative commenter telling her to just use sunbeds calling it “rubbish.”
Commenters were quick to side with her, with one writing: “Your skin tone is beautiful!! idk why people have to project their own self hatred on others.”
“Who honestly still thinks sunbeds are a good idea, in the year of our Lord 2022?” asked another.
While others pointed out that sunbeds can increase your risk of developing skin cancer, why would someone want to use them just to live up to some random internet strangers standards.

Another commenter wrote: “I don’t get why people just don’t mind their own business, not everyone can or wants to tan, what’s wrong w feeling confident pale.”
To which Belle replied: “Yes! Exactly- just trying to embrace myself naturally and hope that other people feel they can do the same. Natural you is the best you.”
