British city gets unwanted title of ‘most dangerous in Europe’ – with another coming second

THE UK is home to the first AND second “most dangerous city in Europe” according to a recent survey of crime statistics.

The study conducted by Expatriate Consultancy advises people looking to move abroad – and there are two places in the country that do not come highly recommended.

Bradford in West Yorkshire has been ranked as the “most dangerous city in Europe“.

The research took into account crime statistics from the last three years, including data on thefts, robberies and attacks, to give Bradford a crime index value.

Cities around the world are ranked by the same system and those with figures of less than 20 are considered fairly safe.

Bradford’s crime index value, however, comes in at a staggering 71.24.

In 2021, the overall crime rate was 146 crimes per 1,000 people – with violence and sexual offences the most common.

Not only is the West Yorkshire city the “most dangerous” on the continent, but it also sits at a worrying 26th most dangerous in the world.

Yet Yorkshiremen aren’t the only Brits who should be worried about their hometown, as second on the Europe’s-most-dangerous list is a city in the West Midlands.

The second “most dangerous city in Europe” is Coventry, where there were 102 crimes per 1,000 people last year.

However locals from the two cities are doubting the accuracy of the survey’s results.

Some claimed that other UK cities have higher crime rates, naming Birmingham for example.

In 2021 Brum had a rate of nearly 137 crimes per 1,000 people.

Bradford’s District Commander, chief superintendent Rob McCoubrey, refused to accept Bradford was really first place.

He told the Express: “West Yorkshire Police do not recognise this data and do not accept how any methodology can provide a credible comparison across continents, countries, and cities.

“Bradford is a safe place to live, work and visit. Like any city where deprivation and poverty exist there are of course challenges.

“However, we work closely with partner agencies and communities to effectively tackle issues as they emerge.

“For example, over the last three years knife crime in Bradford has fallen by 19 percent and residential burglaries by 57 percent.

“It is disappointing that this survey fails to recognise many of the attributes that make Bradford such a fantastic city.”

McCoubrey also explained that the service’s crime data is set by the Home Office and the West Yorkshire Police force adhere to strict rules.

He added: “We are rated as ‘outstanding’ by [Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services] in respect of how we record crimes.

“People in Bradford can have confidence that when they report crime it will be properly recorded and acted upon.”
