TORY rebels face a major backlash if they push to end fracking “once and for all” by backing a vote on the issue.

Labour want to give MPs a chance to overturn the government’s decision to lift the shale extraction ban in England.

The party will use a debate in the Commons today to legislate banning the controversial gas extraction technique for good.

Households could be offered payments of £1000 if fracking sites are built nearby in a bid to overcome opposition.

Tory MP Lee Anderson said: “MPs must not try and block pensioners and people on the minimum wage from getting cheaper fuel. They are out of touch.”

A moratorium had been in place since 2019 and the party said in its manifesto that it wouldn’t lift the ban unless it was scientifically proven to be safe following a series of earth tremors.

Liz Truss ripped up the commitment in a bid to improve energy security saying it can go ahead when there is backing from local residents.

Labour have been in talks with Tory MPs to try and block the government’s fracking plans.

Ed Miliband, Shadow climate change secretary, said Tory MPs shouldn’t allow the government to “ impose expensive, unsafe fracking on communities that do not want it or will they support Labour’s ban on fracking once and for all?”

Charles McAllister, of UK Onshore Oil and Gas, said Labour are “ignorant of reality and of our recognised need for natural gas for decades”.
