GMB’s Susanna Reid claims she knows why Matt Hancock went on I’m A Celeb despite public backlash

GOOD Morning Britain anchor Susanna Reid vented her fury at Matt Hancock entering the I’m A Celebrity jungle – claiming she knew what the politician was “hoping” for.

The ITV broadcaster, 51, presented her gripes on behalf of the politician’s West Suffolk constituents, who are currently without a representative in Westminster as Matt battles bugs Down Under.

In a chat about Matt‘s first Bushtucker trial and his first evening in the I’m A Celebrity camp, Susanna bluntly aired her views.

The Good Morning Britain host insisted: “That’s what he’s hoping for – he’s hoping for some sort of redemption, even a new career maybe.”

When co-host Ben Shephard said I’m A Celeb could be a way to choose the country’s MP’s, Susanna quipped: “Or deselect them.”

She added: “He might his constituents have taken against him.”

As a clip of Matt’s conversation with campmate Charlene White played out – which saw the Loose Women panelist ask how the news had gone down with his constituents – Susanna slammed his claims that everything at home will “be fine.”

She said: “Oh yeah everything’s going to be fine – what about his constituents!

“There are people in West Suffolk that need their MP!”

The former health secretary’s arrival proved to be divisive on the ITV series, with many of the faces unhappy to see him there and Boy George even revealing he was tempted to quit after his mum was left alone in hospital during the coronavirus pandemic.

it was Loose Women star Charlene who managed to pull him aside for a chat, getting the big questions immediately out of the way – in particular the fact Matt was even there considering his role as an MP required him to be in parliament at the moment.

As they spoke in the lookout, Matt commented: “Everybody’s really nice. Nobody’s trying to be spikey are they?”

“Were you nervous about that?” Charlene asked, prompting him to say that it was “on the worry list” before he entered camp.

When asking him why he would do it, Matt responded: “Because there’s, honest truth, is because there’s so few ways in which politicians can show that we’re human beings, so I just thought it would be good to do that. I’ve got a sense of adventure.”

He agreed that he hoped people would ‘see him for him’.

Charlene wasn’t about to back down though, and later declared in the telegraph: “Matt has a tough hill to climb, but he’s put himself on that hill and for me as a journalist, I have to ask him why.”

Meanwhile, later on today’s GMB, Kate Garraway suggested Matt had already broken a major show rule.
