Millions at risk of deadly asthma attacks just from having sex, experts warn

SEX can trigger asthma attacks, a study found.

A big effort in the bedroom can bring on breathing problems for sufferers – around 5.4million Brits.

Exercise is a well-known risk but scientists at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology said rumpy pumpy may be underestimated.

Dr Ariel Leung said: “Many people don’t realise that the energy expenditure of sexual activity is about equivalent to walking up two flights of stairs.

“Reported cases are infrequent, possibly because those suffering an asthma flare may not realise the trigger.”

Researchers searched for case reports and found some people have allergic reactions to semen or latex in condoms.

MIND MATTERS

They added that some “post-coital asthma exacerbations” are sparked by physical exertion in the bedroom.

Exercise can trigger attacks because heavy breathing makes the air cooler and drier, which irritates the lung linings and makes them swell up.

Dr Leung estimated that between 40 and 90 per cent of asthmatics suffer symptoms or attacks when they exercise.

Study co-author Dr A.M. Aminian added: “Another possible cause of under-reporting of this condition is the intimate nature of the subject.

“People may not be comfortable discussing with their allergist an asthma flare that was caused by sex.

“When sexual activity-induced asthma is properly identified and treated, allergists are better able to improve their patient’s quality of life.”
