Porsche reveals £170k off-road 911 inspired by rally cars that will slay deserts then handle the weekly shop
Porsche has revealed an incredible off-road 4×4 version of its infamous 911 sports car.
Shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Porsche 911 Dakar gets raised suspension and chunky tyres to be just as fast off the Tarmac.
The Dakar bit refers to the Dakar rally – a gruelling off-road race held every year.
Porsche won the Dakar rally in 1984, inspiring this limited edition model today.

Just 2,500 Porsche 911 Dakars will be made, and they all cost a whopping £173,000.
And if you want yours to look like the 1984 Porsche 953 winner in its Rothmans livery, that’ll be an extra £18,000.
But for all that cash you are getting a very special car.

The German firm starts with a 911 and raises the suspension by 5cm. although you can raise it a further 3cm at the press of a button.
Porsche says you can drive with the full 8cm lift at up 106mph. Any faster and it’ll lower itself back down.
To help it carry that speed on the rough stuff the Dakar is fitted with large off-road sport tyres.
Providing the power is a turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six engine with 480hp, which will get the Dakar from 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds and on to 149mph.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard, which together with an advanced all-wheel-drive system allows for two new off-road driving modes plus a new off-road launch control.
To complete the look, Porsche is offering an optional roof rack with built-in lamps that will come in handy for fuel or water canisters or a even a roof tent.
Inside you get unique Dakar badging and blue and white accents if you spec the optional Rothmans look.
But Porsche is keen to point out that the Dakar is as good on the road as it is off it and could be used every day by owners if needed.
