I’m a professional hairstylist – five high street buys to avoid, including dry shampoo
WE’VE all reached for the dry shampoo when we can’t be bothered to wash our hair, and I know a hair mask is the first thing I do on a pamper evening.
But according to a senior hair stylist, they are two of the various hair products we should avoid completely.
Hairstylist Renato Russo, posting on the @gasalons page, regularly shares haircare tips with the account’s 10,000 followers.
In one of their recent videos, they share what products we should be avoiding – including dry shampoo, hair masks and purple toning shampoo.
“Senior hair stylist tells you which hair products to AVOID!
“Drug store shampoo. Usually contain toxic ingredients like alcohol, silicones, and sulphates. Some types of alcohol might cause your hair to dry, especially if it’s curly.

“Purple shampoo. Particles are so small that they are going to replace any toner or colour you have received.
“A toner is meant to last for over a month, a purple shampoo works just for that one wash.
“Contains aggressive ingredients due to its nature of penetrating under hair cuticles.
“Box hair dye. Contains substitutes for ammonia most likely another alkaline agent such as monoethanolamine or similar which tends to be even more harmful than ammonia.

“Dry shampoo. Sucks oil out of the hair including the good oil, the one that protects our scalp.
“Abusing dry shampoo means dirty hair faster and in some cases, skin irritation.

“Hair masque. Contains a very diluted formula. You can test it by putting the mask upside down and [seeing] if it drops out of the jar. If it does, you are buying more water than other ingredients.
“Ending up spending more money because you need more of it.”
Fans loved the stylist’s honesty, with the video gaining more than 56,000 views.
