I’m thinking of confessing because the guilt from cheating is eating me up
DEAR DEIDRE: I CHEATED on my girlfriend and have been overwhelmed with feelings of guilt since.
I’m terrified she’s going to find out and I think I should confess the truth, but I know she will never forgive me.
I’m 27 and she’s 26. We’ve been living together for four years.
A year ago, we were going through a rough patch.
I got drunk on a boys’ night out and stupidly had a one-night stand.
It meant nothing and will never happen again.
I felt so awful afterwards and realised how much I love my girlfriend.

But ever since, I’ve been so stressed that she will find out. I think about it all the time.
I hate lying to her every day. However, telling her I cheated will break her heart.
What should I do?
DEIDRE SAYS: Easing your conscience will only hurt your girlfriend. It won’t change the past or make you happier.
You’ve learned from your mistake. Unless you’re certain she’ll find out, perhaps it’s better to deal with your guilt another way.
