The best new TV to stream next week – from Perfect Match to Carnival Row
STUCK for things to watch on Netflix and co? Well, then look no further. The Sun has got you covered with all the best new TV shows coming to your screens.
From the popular Perfect Match to Carnival Row – there’s no shortage of shows to binge-watch until your heart’s content.
What’s new
Full Swing – Netflix
Football, Formula 1, tennis and even cheerleading – these days, every sport you can think of is letting camera crews get up close and personal with top stars as they battle it out to be the best.
Now it’s time to tee off with this hugely involving eight-part series giving us an access-all-areas pass into the world of golf.
Full Swing follows the likes of Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Ian Poulter, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas as they compete in the mentally and physically demanding PGA Tour. Along the way, we have a front-row ticket for tournaments such as the US Open, The Open Championship, The Masters, The Players and the PGA Championship.
And because the cameras keep rolling away from the course, we get to find out how they roll when they’re not busy aiming for birdies. Entertaining and eye-opening, you don’t have to be a golf obsessive to get caught up in the drama on and off the fairway. But if you are a golf fan, this really is <fore> you.
Available from Wednesday
Perfect Match – flash
When better for Netflix to drop its latest dating extravaganza than on Valentine’s Day? Perfect Match takes a bunch of contestants from other reality shows – including Damian Powers from Love Is Blind, Chloe Veitch from Too Hot To Handle and Will Richardson from The Mole – whisks them off to a (yep, you’ve guessed it) sun-soaked paradise villa and then lets the sparks fly.
The idea is that the most compatible couples will get the chance to play matchmaker, breaking up other couples and sending them on dates with other singles.
But will they be successful? Or will it all end in tears? And who will be crowned the Perfect Match? Join host Nick Lachey for all the tropical shenanigans.
Four episodes drop this week, followed by another batch next week and a final four on 28 February.
Available from Tuesday
The Upshaws – Flash
The creation of US comedian Wanda Sykes, The Upshaws is unlike most mainstream family sitcoms, in that it isn’t afraid to make light of very tough subjects.
But that doesn’t mean the show – which centres around hard-working, emotionally-stretched Bennie (Mike Epps) and Regina Upshaw (Kim Fields) and their extended family – is heavy going.
This new batch of episodes – the second half of season two – picks up the pieces after Bennie and Regina’s sister Lucretia (Wanda) found themselves behind bars, following the discovery of illegal parts trafficking at the family garage business. Whoops.
Available from Thursday
Hello Tomorrow! – APPLE TV+ and Flash
Prepare to blast off into the wonderful, shiny world of tomorrow. This stylish sci-fi comedy- drama follows a group of smooth-talking sales people, led by Jack Billings (Billy Crudup), who spend their days trying to convince ordinary folk to buy into timeshare properties on the Moon.
Set in a retro-futuristic version of 1950s America – think Mad Men crossed with The Jetsons – the series finds Jack doing his best to bring happiness and hope into people’s lives, including that of inexperienced new salesman Joey (Nicolas Podany).
While it does take a little while to buy into what drives the central characters, there’s little doubt that Hello Tomorrow! looks incredible.
An almost comic-book-like, beautifully-rendered imagining of what people in the 50s thought the future might look like – we’re talking sleek, floating Cadillacs, large desktop video-phones and gleaming rockets.
This is unlike anything else on TV right now, so if you’re into high-concept yet unexpectedly heart-warming sci-fi drama, you’re likely to be sold on Hello Tomorrow!.
Available from Friday
Sharper – Flash
New York’s richest are the target of some very clever, manipulative con artists in this smart and glossy-looking psychological thriller.
Seductive Madeline (Julianne Moore) senses the chance to make some serious money when she finds a way into the life of billionaire Richard (John Lithgow).
But soon the lines become blurred as love, jealousy and family loyalty are stirred into the mix, and it becomes clear that no one is quite who they seem…
Available from Friday
Make Or Break – Flash
When you think of surfers, you probably imagine chilled-out, easy-going types. But that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to the World Surf League Championship Tour – as anyone who watched the first series of Make Or Break will know.
The men and women competing here are very much in it to win it, ready to put their bodies and mental wellbeing on the line to come out on top and ride the wave of success.
The stakes – and waves – are even higher in this second series, which transports us around the globe to the biggest surf competitions of the 2022 season.
It also includes all new interviews with international surfing superstars such as Kelly Slater, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Stephanie Gilmore and Tatiana Weston-Webb. Expect triumph, tears and some spectacular surfing action.
The first half of the new season lands this week, with the remaining four episodes arriving on 24 February>.
Available from Friday
Star Trek: Picard – Prime Video and Flash
Before he boldly goes off into the sunset for good, Jean-Luc Picard beams back on to our screens for the third and final series of this critically acclaimed Star Trek spin-off.
This time, Picard (played by the legend that is Patrick Stewart) decides to put his retirement on hold when he receives a top-secret SOS message from his old <Next Generation> shipmate Dr Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden).
Calling upon the assistance of another old friend, Captain William Ryker (Jonathan Frakes), Picard sets off to save Crusher and take on a terrifying new enemy in the process.
Visually, this final season of Picard owes more to darkly atmospheric sci-fi classics like Blade Runner than to The Next Generation – but that said, with plenty of familiar faces returning for one last hurrah, it’s also drenched in nostalgic charm. The series launches with a double bill.
Available from Friday
Carnival Row – Prime Video and Flash
If the people behind Peaky Blinders teamed up with the folk who make His Dark Materials to create a show, it would surely turn out a bit like Carnival Row.
Blending period crime drama with dark fairy-tale fantasy, the first series introduced viewers to a world where mythical creatures – refugees from their own world – co-exist uneasily with humans in a fictional city that’s not a million miles from Victorian London.
The show returns on Friday, and relations between the creatures and the humans are at an all-time low, thanks to a series of gruesome murders.
While former police inspector Philo (Orlando Bloom) investigates, Vignette (Cara Delevingne) and the Black Raven conspire to pay back the human leaders for their continuing oppression.
Spectacular gothic adventure.
Available from Friday
Summer House – Hayu and Flash
Pack a weekend bag and pop open the bubbly. It’s back to the Hamptons, where the Summer House is throwing open its doors once again for a seventh series of glossy reality fun.
As ever, the gang of successful, minted New Yorkers are in the mood to party as hard as they work, but with personal issues weighing on their minds, there promises to be tears as well as laughter.
Fans will be pleased to hear that show favourites Kyle Cooke, Lindsay Hubbard, Carl Radke, Amanda Batula, Danielle Olivera, Paige DeSorbo and Mya Allen are all in attendance this time, and there are some new faces, including Gabby Prescod, Chris Leoni and Samantha Feher. Party on.
Available from Tuesday
Gucci: Sex, Lies And Fashion – Paramount+ and Flash
Gucci is well known as a super-swanky, very expensive fashion brand, but it wasn’t always that way.
Back in the early 80s, the famous fashion house was on the verge of bankruptcy, its tattered reputation in the gutter.
All that changed when the late Maurizio Gucci hired American fashion retailer Dawn Mello, who injected new life and new ideas into the brand, helping to build it into the world-conquering giant that it is today.
The surprising and sometimes controversial story of that transformation is told in this feature-length documentary.
Available from Wednesday
Heartbreak Island – Discovery+ and Flash
Season three of the romantic reality show brings us another batch of impossibly beautiful single girls and boys, all hoping to find love and bag the $100,000 cash prize.
To have a chance, they’ll need to pair up with another contestant and avoid elimination by triumphing in tough physical and mental challenges.
This time round, the 16 contestants are a truly international bunch, including scalding-hot singletons from the US, Australia, New Zealand and even the UK, which is represented by Kieran Hickey and the appropriately-named Max Batchelor.
Okay, it’s a barely-concealed Love Island knock-off, but when it comes to sun-drenched dating shows filled with fit contestants, the more the merrier.
Available from Tuesday
LA Seduction – Paramount+ and Flash
Struggling actress Kathryn (Pretty Little Liars’ Ashley Benson) is unhappily married to a rich movie producer when she finds herself falling hopelessly for her hunky and charming new gardener Ben (Shiloh Fernandez, Euphoria).
But is perfect Ben who he claims to be? Is Kathryn about to find herself in grave danger? And what’s that eccentric millionaire who’s just moved in next door got to do with it all?
While it won’t win any awards anytime soon – unless the Oscars have instigated a new ‘Hammiest Film’ category – LA Seduction is still an enjoyably over-the-top psychological thriller that looks the part, even if it lacks real depth.
Available from Tuesday
Helsinki Crimes – All4 and Flash
The latest Walter Presents offering whisks us off to Helsinki in Finland, where over-worked cops Timo (Ollie Rahkonen) and Onerva (Olga Temonen) are tasked with solving a series of perplexing and shocking crimes.
From a violent incel who’s been attacking women around the city, to a hacker stealing identities, the pair have their work cut out – particularly later in the series when a nasty criminal strikes close to home.
Despite not being as slick as some other Scandi Noir shows of recent times, the eight-episode Helsinki Crimes is still well-crafted, suitably gory and boasts a likeable lead pair.
Available from Friday
Superstore – ITVX
Yes, yes, we’re aware that if you switch on ITV2 most days, you’re almost guaranteed to come across an episode of Superstore – and that it’s on Netflix too – but from this week, all six seasons of the US workplace sitcom will also be available on demand on ITVX.
For anyone who’s yet to check it out, the critically acclaimed show stars America Ferrera and Ben Feldman, and follows the everyday trials of a loveable group of employees at Cloud 9, a huge store that sells everything from groceries to guns. Funny, silly and armed with a trolley-full of heart, Superstore is worth a visit.
Available from Thursday
Jonathan Ross: Must-See Films – ITVX and Flash
Jonathan’s always been a massive film buff, so he’s the perfect choice to host this new, monthly look at some of the tastiest movie treats available to watch on ITVX.
And, because it launches on Valentine’s Day, Wossy’s lovingly hand-picked some perfect date night watches to chat about, including Flashdance, Mannequin and Mermaids.
He’ll also be taking us on a high-octane race through the Fast & Furious series and Ryan Gosling flick Drive, plus unearthing some hidden gems available on the streamer, including gorgeous animation Belleville Rendez-vous and Cary Grant classic His Girl Friday. Pass the popcorn.
