My colleague ignored me when I asked to go for a drink – I’m so embarrassed
DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I asked my new colleague if he fancied meeting for a drink, he ignored me.
Now it seems like he is avoiding me and I feel so embarrassed.
I’m a man of 23, and in my first job. Everyone works remotely, so I don’t have an office social life.
My colleague, who is 28, lives near me and has always been very friendly over Zoom.
We have also chatted on email about our lives a bit. I thought it would be nice to get together in person.
I sent him a WhatsApp message suggesting we meet in a local pub one evening but he didn’t reply.
Thinking he hadn’t seen my message, I sent another a few days later. But he didn’t even acknowledge it.
He has definitely cooled towards me since. I feel rejected and humiliated and more alone than ever.

DEIDRE SAYS: You’ve done nothing wrong. It’s natural to want to develop a friendship with someone you get on with.
But perhaps he doesn’t like to mix business with pleasure, or he may have another reason not to meet, something he might be embarrassed about.
Try to stay polite and professional with him. Don’t let this put you off making friends with other people.
