Who lives in Arundel Castle?

Arundel castle is the historic home of the Duke of Norfolk, having been occupied by that family line for over 850 years.

The castle has also been the seat of the Earls of Arundel, which is the son of the Duke.

The castle is currently home to Edward William Fitzalan-Howard, 18th Duke of Norfolk and his wife Francesca Herbet.

When was Arundel castle built?

It was constructed in 1068 by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel.

There have however been many alterations to the original construction.

De Montgomery’s original foundation consisted of a motte, a high mound of earth surrounded by a dry moat, with a double bailey.

King Henry I gave both the castle and its lands to his second wife Adeliza of Louvain, who remarried after the death of Henry I.

The stone keep was built by her second husband William d’Albini, followed by the construction of a stone castle by Henry II.

The castle was damaged in the English Civil War and then restored in the 18th and 19th centuries by Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk.

Where is Arundel Castle?

The castle is based in Arundel, West Sussex.

It is 20.2 miles away from Brighton, and 63 miles from Central London.

What is Arundel Castle famous for?

The castle has been used in a number of high profile films, such as 1994’s The Madness Of King George starring Nigel Hawthorne and Helen Mirren, and 2017’s Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot.

There is a cricket pitch called Arundel Castle Cricket Ground, located in its gardens, built in 1895. It has hosted both International and county cricket during its time.

It is a Grade I listed building, having been designated this status in March 1949.

The castle gardens are closed in the winter, but are open the rest of the year for visitors.
