I torn up since my son told me he’s gay – what if he gets bullied?
DEAR DEIDRE: MY lovely, kind and hilarious son, who would make any woman a wonderful husband, has told me he’s gay.
I’m his mum and I’m 57. He’s 35. I know it shouldn’t make a difference, but I’m struggling to come to terms with this.
My son is an only child and he was such a gorgeous little boy.
He left school and studied animal behaviour and now he works for a big animal charity. He has a heart of gold.
He’s never had a girlfriend, just some close female friends and lots of male friends too.
He’s been part of a theatre group for years and he also DJs at the weekends.
A month ago he came to me and said he had something to tell me – he’d found somebody special for a relationship but it was another man.
Deep down, I probably knew but I’m worried for him.
What if he gets bullied or picked on? I can’t stop crying.

DEIDRE SAYS: Subconsciously you may have known, but hearing the words can still come as a bit of a shock.
He’s still the same lovely, kind and funny guy you love and you can still be proud of the person he has become.
You can find great support through FFLAG, a charity supporting Friends and Family of Lesbians or Gays or those who have a bisexual family member (fflag.org.uk, 0300 688 0368) where you can talk with another parent who understands how you feel.
