Mum shares urgent warning about silicone plates as she reveals her toddler son stopped eating for weeks because of it
A MUM has shared an urgent warning about silicone plates, after revealing her toddler son stopped eating for weeks.
Ashley Stewart couldn’t figure out why her little boy was off his food for days on end.
But then she tried something off his plate, and realised what the problem was.
“My toddler stopped eating because of this…” she wrote on Instagram.
“If you use silicone plates for your toddler you should know this! For a few weeks my toddler started eating horribly.
“He would take a few bites and then not want anymore. I tried everything, but he wouldn’t eat!!
“Then one day I took a bite of the leftover food off his plate and I had to spit it out. It tasted SO BADLY of soap.
“No wonder he wasn’t eating.”
After making the discovery, she switched his plates, and he “immediately started eating again”.
But even if you do have silicone plates for your child, you don’t need to throw them away.
Ashley also explained how to fix the problem.
“Bake silicone plates in the oven at 250 F for one hour to remove soap buildup,” she said.
In addition, use “mild or unscented dish soap” to wash the plates in future, only put the plates on the top rack of the dishwasher and don’t soak them in soapy water.
Her post was quickly commented on by other parents, with one writing: “I use vinegar to get the soap taste off.
“I didn’t know about baking in the oven. Thank you.
“I do a quick rinse of them and soak in vinegar if it needs it.”
As another added: “We fixed it by tossing them all out and never buying silicone plates again. Problem solved!
“No wonder my first is a good eater.
“She ate soap food for the first year, everything tastes great compared to that!”
