Is work promotion a chance of a lifetime or poisoned chalice?
DEAR DEIDRE: A job opportunity has come up within my company, but I fear it’s a poisoned chalice.
The problem is the people in the new team, who are all lazy and argumentative.
I’m a 44-year-old woman, working in sales. I’ve been at the company for ten years.
The new job comes with a large pay increase, as well as a recognisably better title.
Naturally, there’s also a much bigger workload. That would be fine, if the team did their bit, but I know they don’t.
The person who’s leaving the job has totally burnt out.
I don’t want that to happen to me. I love the job I’m doing now, and the team of people I work with are all great.
My manager is really supportive too, and there are no day-to-day issues.
But I can’t stay on this career level forever. I’ve been advised to go for the new role, and there might not be another opportunity for years.
What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: If your gut is telling you taking this role would be a bad move, listen to it.
Higher status and more money won’t compensate for a miserable work life.
Then again, perhaps if you got the job you could change things in the team.
Talk to your manager about the pros and cons. Also get advice from a close friend or relative.
If there is no other opportunity to progress within your company, think about looking elsewhere.
