Glynis Johns dead at 100: Tony winner and Oscar nominee most well-known for playing mom in Mary Poppins dies
TONY Award-winning actor Glynis Johns, who famously appeared in the Disney film Mary Poppins, has died.
Johns, who played Mrs. Winifred Banks in the hit 1964 film that starred Julie Andrews in the title role, was 100.
Johns’ publicist, Mitch Clem, confirmed her death to local ABC affiliate KABC.
She died of natural causes, Clem said.
Before playing Mrs. Banks, Johns appeared in another Disney movie, The Sword and the Rose.
Johns received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her work in the 1960 film The Sundowners.
Her final two films were While You Were Sleeping and Superstar.
In addition to her film work, Johns won a Tony Award winner for originating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.
Sondheim wrote the character’s signature song, Send in the Clowns, just for Johns.
