I’m a TV stylist – my top comeback clothes of 2024 & the iconic Beyonce top you need to bin

0

SOME of the biggest predicted trends of 2024 are relics from the Nineties and early Noughties – there’s a fair chance you even have some of these items stuffed under your bed.

But should you actually wear them? Clemmie Fieldsend asks Mark Heyes stylist on ITV’s Lorraine, who rates them out of five.

Boho

SEVENTIES boho was reimagined in the Noughties thanks to trendsetters Kate Moss and Nicole Richie.

Now: A model goes Boho in Ralph Lauren[/caption]

Be it maxi dresses with hair braids or paisley prints and floppy hats, we all jumped on the bandwagon.

Now haute hippie looks are on the Ralph Lauren runway.

MARK SAYS: Boho is such an easy, comfortable trend you can’t really go wrong with.

You’ll probably have pieces tucked away at the back of your wardrobe, but be careful not to overdo it. You don’t want to look like you’re off to a fancy dress party.

Bandana tops

Now: Miu Miu on the catwalk[/caption]

SHE could wear a bin bag and look good, but Beyonce chose a bandana top for Party In The Park in 2000.

Fast-forward 24 years and the questionable trend is back once again, this time on the catwalk at Miu Miu. And bare hips, or love handles, are taking centre stage.

MARK SAYS: All trends, big or small, are about body confidence, so if you think you can rock a bandana top, then go for it.

It was a classic the first time around, but maybe it can’t be done again?

Let’s be honest, it’s one of the most unflattering cuts you can have in your wardrobe.

Wide-leg trousers

Now: Actress Katie Holmes has been spotted in waist-cinching, leg-lengthening bottoms[/caption]

ONCE seen on singer Aaliyah, and girl group All Saints, the oversized trouser is creeping back.

Actress Katie Holmes has been spotted in waist-cinching, leg- lengthening bottoms and they were seen on the catwalk for Loewe – recently named as the world’s hottest brand by retailer Lyst.

MARK SAYS: If you have a pair of these hanging in your wardrobe, definitely keep them. Wide-leg trousers are super-flattering – and make for a taller silhouette.

Don’t be put off if you’re short. As long as you get them from a petite section, or get them tailored to your height, they will elongate you.

Micro shorts

Then: Kate Moss in micro denims was one of the most memorable looks from Noughties Glastonbury

Now: Model Emily Ratajkowski is the micro-short muse[/caption]

KATE MOSS in micro denims was one of the most memorable looks from Noughties Glastonbury. But micro shorts have now moved on to the Gucci and Chanel catwalks.

This time round, model Emily Ratajkowski is the micro-short muse, and according to Pinterest’s predictions, we can expect to see a lot more bum cheeks this year.

MARK SAYS: While it can look stylish, there are safer ways to give a nod to this look. If you’re happy with your pins then give this a try, but I would go for a wider silhouette. It’s a kinder cut, rather than the skin-tight micros.

Peplums

Now: Naomi Campbell has brought the shape up-to-date

ANOTHER instalment from the Noughties, the peplum top created waists on everyone from Hollywood royalty to Towie stars such as Amy Childs.

Now, Naomi Campbell has brought the shape up-to-date with a sophisticated twist for Alexander McQueen’s spring/summer 2024 collection.

MARK SAYS: Bring it on!

Peplums are one of the most flattering cuts you can wear and I can’t wait to see peplum styles for spring/summer occasions, such as the races and weddings.

Round of applause from me.

Timberlands

Then: Nineties stars including J-Lo could often be seen in Timberlands[/caption]

Now: Rihanna are rocking the trend again[/caption]

ARE you old enough to have Timberlands from the Nineties when stars including J-Lo could be seen in them?

Emily Ratajkowski and Rihanna are rocking the trend again, but the style may not be for everyone.

MARK SAYS: The danger is that you wore them during the best time of your life – and you’re hanging on to it.

Plus, I have a three-season rule: If a micro trend has been around for three consecutive seasons then it’s a goer.

But Timberlands are a trend that we need to wait a while for before we should all start wearing them. Ask me in 2025!

Polo shirts

Now: Taylor Swift gives the polo the trend a go

THE preppy polo shirt was hugely popular in the Noughties, thanks to characters like Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) on teen drama The OC.

Now sporty tops, from polo shirts to rugby tops, are back. Victoria Beckham and Taylor Swift are giving the trend a go.

MARK SAYS: This is a trend that Prada started last year.

And if Prada does it, we all want a piece – even other designers and high street brands.

It can be done in a chic colourway such as a neutral tone or soft grey.

Those sort of tones can look expensive, but other bold colours and stripes just look like you are off to watch a rugby match.

Ribbons

Then: Beyonce, circa 2000, wearing an incredible green Versace dress with a ribboned corset[/caption]

Now: Iris Law, daughter of actors Jude Law and Sadie Frost, tried the exact look a year ago[/caption]

WE’VE seen bows in hair and on clothes thanks to a quiet rise in balletcore on TikTok.

But ribbon-ware is set to boom this year.

Think Beyonce, circa 2000, wearing an incredible green Versace dress with a ribboned corset.

Iris Law, daughter of actors Jude Law and Sadie Frost, tried the exact look a year ago. And now Vogue has predicted that Gen Z are going to embrace ribbon corsetry.

MARK SAYS: A classic Nineties and Noughties throwback. I really remember corsetry the first time round with maxi skirts. It was huge.

However, I would stick to special occasions. Maybe wait a couple of seasons before you start rocking it in the daytime.
