Wimbledon bus fire: Dramatic bang as double decker erupts into flames in critical incident triggering rush hour chaos
COPS have declared a ‘critical incident’ after a bus burst into flames.
Residents in Wimbledon say they “heard a huge bang” before flames were seen coming from the double-decker.
Shocking photos show the blaze engulfing part of the road after the street had been cordoned off.
One witness, Max Pashley, told CityAM: “We heard a huge bang. We were terrified.”
Locals have been warned to keep their windows and doors shut because of the smoke.
The fire has caused traffic chaos for many people on the way to work.
A police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 7.23am on Thursday, to reports of a bus on fire at Wimbledon Hill/Alwyne Road, SW19.
“Officers, London Fire Brigade [LFB] attended. At the scene a bus had caught fire.
“Road closures and cordons are in place. We expect them to remain for some time. There were no reported injuries.
“We thank the local community for their patience and cooperation as emergency services work at the scene. If possible please avoid the area.”
A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said they are unsure of the exact cause of the fire.
