The man requested special assistance to disembark the aircraft in an Ambulift which is attached to the back of a truck.

It is believed that he was trying to pass his bag to a staff member when he fell from the platform, the Daily Record reported.

The OAP was then rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after suffering from a severe head injury.

He was in a critical condition before passing away a week later on December 7.

It’s understood that the tragic incident was witnessed by the man’s wife.

A probe has been launched by police and the Health and Safety Executive into the man’s death.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were made aware of the death of an 81-year-old man within Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on Thursday, 7 December, 2023 following a fall at Edinburgh Airport on Tuesday, 28 November, 2023.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and there are no suspicious circumstances.

“The Health and Safety Executive have been advised.”

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: “We are aware of the death of an 81-year-old man following a fall at Edinburgh Airport. We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

“At this time we are cooperating fully with regulatory authorities in their investigations.”

The Healthy and Safety Executive has been approached for comment.
