Posting in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning tips Facebook Group, one user asked: “Does anyone have any tips on how to dry washing during the winter months for a family of five?”.

The comments section of the post was flooded with helpful replies.

One user said: “Buy a pulley high dryer that fits overhead.

“It dries quite fast and is out of the way.

“It costs nothing to dry your clothes with.

“I’ve had one for a few years and it’s a godsend”.

Replying to this comment, another user said: “I agree with this suggestion. I’ve had one for 30 years with a family of five and I’ve never needed to buy a tumble dryer.”

An overhead clothes airer or pulley, is a clothes drying mechanism that is attached to the ceiling.

It is usually made of wooden slats, fitted together with metal bars.

It uses a rope and pulley system so that you can pull the dryer down to put clothes on it and then pull it up towards the ceiling and out of the way.

The overhead clothes pulley is an incredibly old mechanism for drying clothes, that dates back to the eighteenth century.

However, it has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the fact that it is environmentally friendly, and doesn’t cost anything to use.

You can buy a pulley dryer from Amazon for £39.99.

Many other Facebook users commented on the post with their own clothes drying hacks.

One user said: “I hang mine on the curtain poles that are above the radiator for an hour or two, usually when I put the heaters on at night to heat the kids’ rooms up”.

Another user said: “Clothes dry well on a rail or on hangers between the doorways”.

A third user suggested: “I get a load of coat hangers and hang them all over, sounds grim but gets the job done.

“I hang them on curtain rails and over the shower etc and the smaller stuff goes on clothes airers.

“I don’t use any heat”.
