I’m a DIY girlie and was judged by cheeky guy in B&Q – but it’s what he said to the cashier that had me fuming
A DIY fanatic has been left fuming after being judged by a rude B&Q customer while picking up wood – just because she’s female.
Alex Lawson, from Aberdeen, regularly shares her home transformation tips on TikTok where she boasts 77,000 followers (@casalawson).
The savvy blogger urges people to “feel the fear and DIY it anyway” with many swearing by her easy tutorials to help make their house a home.
Alex, who now lives in London, also offers interior design consultations for anybody struggling for inspiration.
But on a recent trip to B&Q to pick up wood for an upcoming project, she was stunned to be questioned by a “condescending” man in the checkout line.
She said: “Don’t you just love the general public, especially when they involve themselves in stuff that’s nothing to do with them.
“I’ve just been to B&Q to get supplies for my project to get on with it today and I’m stood in the trade queue and the guy in front of me goes ‘this is the trade queue, the normal queue’s over there’.
“I was like ‘uh huh, I’m in the trade queue’.
“He goes ‘so you’ve got a trade card do you?’
“I just continued to stand there minding my own business with my wood.”
And the situation only got worse when the customer reached the front of the line.
“Then he had the cheek when he gets served by the guy to go ‘I dunno what her trade is'”, Alex fumed.
But she instantly hit back: “My trade, mr condescending man, is teaching girlies on the internet how to panel and make their houses look nice without breaking the bank
“We don’t need people like you in our space with negative vibes.
“Why, why do they feel the need?
“Anyway rant over, I’m off to panel. This girl who’s got her trade card got her discount.”
She later added: “This wasnt a nember of staff, it was a general member of the public.
“The staff at my local B&Q are nothing but helpful, I’ve always had a really positive experience with how friendly and inclusive their staff are.
“Let’s hope the customers can learn from them.”
Alex uploaded the video to TikTok with the caption: “POV: When your trade is teaching the girlies how to panel and Mr B&Q doesn’t get it.”
And it’s already racked up more than 271,000 views, with social media users outraged over the incident.
One fumed: “I can’t believe this stuff still happen.”
A second wrote: “WHAT!!!!!! I’d be raging at that!!!!!!!”
Meanwhile, a third added: “Can’t even count on both hands how many times I’ve been asked this at the trade queue it’s so frustrating.”
Alex first became interested in DIY after she purchased her first home in September 2019.
The engineer, who was a finalist on Scotland’s Christmas Home of the Year, previously said: “I am on a mission to inspire people to step out of their comfort zone, try new projects and create a beautiful home for themselves in the process.”
