I did a council house swap & gave it a total transformation with B&Q & Ikea buys – people say it looks like a ‘palace’
A WOMAN has revealed that she did a council house swap and has given her new home a stunning makeover.
The young woman, named Dem, used bargain buys from B&Q and Ikea to give the home an overhaul whilst on a budget – leaving many open-mouthed.
Council house tenants are able to switch their house to another rented council property if the other person agrees, and although the decor in the home Dem moved into wasn’t to her taste, she decided to ditch the grey and give the space a chic beige aesthetic.
Posting on social media, the DIY enthusiast shared a before and after look of the home’s renovation.
She explained: “Six months ago we did a house swap.”
As she showed a look around the home, which was in need of some love and personality, Dem added: “Trying to make a house a home.”
She also added: “Every room has been a challenge, but we’re getting there and the main rooms are done.”
The proud DIY fan showed off a finished look at her home – which is now complete with on-trend panelling, a stylish stair runner, gorgeous accessories and a living room of dreams.
I haven’t spent a massive fortune

Dem later explained that she nabbed her curtains, curtain rods and TV unit from Ikea.
She also revealed her decision to ditch the grey, as she admitted: “I had to get rid of the grey.
“I had it in my old house and it just felt too cold and not very homely!”
When it comes to the paint Dem used, she explained: “It’s a colour match from B&Q, I colour matched the Farrow and Ball skimming stone.”
The mother explained that this isn’t the first home makeover she has done – and shared where she got her inspiration from.
The savvy mum concluded: “To be honest I just looked on TikTok! I looked at what others had done and put some Ideas together.
“I haven’t spent a massive fortune either.
“My old house was even worse when I moved in and I did that up too.”
What is a council house swap?
A council house swap, also known as a mutual exchange, is a scheme for people who live in a council or housing association property who would like to swap their home with another tenant.
People often swap to get a larger or smaller home or to move to a different area.
When you mutually exchange your home, you are swapping tenancies with someone else.
Anyone with a full secure or fixed term social housing tenancy in their name with a clear rent account can do a mutual exchange.
You cannot swap your home if you:
- have an introductory tenancy
- have a probationary tenancy
- are in temporary housing
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @demfitter.xo, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 86,900 views.
Social media users were stunned at the DIY job and many took to the comments to express this.
